Vals Latina by Paul Martin (solo guitar)
A tribute to Augustine Barrios Mangore, perhaps the best guitarist of all time. Vals Latina is steeped in the popular sounds of South American classical guitar where charming melodic lines, rhythms and harmonies dance around each other courting the listener. Although the piece has the feeling of a vals the ¾ meter is constantly interrupted with an impish and irregular 4/4 bar characterising the opening theme. The mid theme secures the vals meter with a hemiola and a clear reference to Barrios before the inevitable return to the opening theme. A dynamic and satisfying flourish exploiting the full range of the open 'G' tuning, closes the piece on a real high. A modest and fitting tribute to Augustine Barrios Mangore, one of the great masters of the classical guitar.
